Auntie Anne’s
Thank you for your interest in Auntie Anne’s Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzel products. We welcome and appreciate the input from our customers so that we may continually improve our system and respond to their needs and suggestions.
In response to your question about vegan and vegetarian menu items, the Pretzel Mix does not contain any ingredients from animal, dairy or egg sources. However, most of the dips, the Sour Cream & Onion Pretzel (from the topping), Mocha Dutch Ice, Dutch Treat Products, and Pretzels that are dipped in butter do contain ingredients that are from animal sources (primarily milk or dairy related). Additionally, our Pretzel Dog and Pepperoni Pretzel contain meat products. Finally, our Pretzel Mix does contain sugar that is processed in a facility that utilizes bone char filters.
Overall, there are several of our pretzels (Original, Cinnamon Sugar, Garlic, Jalapeno, etc.) that would not directly contain any ingredients from animal sources, provided that they are requested without butter.
Applebee’s:
“Thank you for contacting us. At this time we do not have any items that are entirely free of animal products. Applebee’s does not claim its products to be either vegetarian or vegan nor that they meet the requirements for any other special dietary regimen. Dairy and egg products may be present in meatless recipes. Trace amounts of meat or animal products may be present as a result of preparation or cooking.”

Ariel’s Restaurant
Type of Food: Local, Farm-to-Table
Address: 29 Stone Road, Brookfield
Phone Number: 802-276-3939
Website: http://www.arielsrestaurant.com/
This dedicated farm-to-table restaurant often has vegan items on their menu and if they don’t they are always willing to accommodate them. It is recommended that when making a reservation that you let them know you are vegan, so the chef can be sure that they have items on the menu that are interesting for you. The restaurant focuses on using local season vegetables and have dishes such as a grilled ramp(wild leek) and potato soup with grilled ramp dumplings, and charred ramps, asparagus and fiddleheads in herb vinaigrette on the spring menu. However, their best known vegan entree is a bisteeya (filled phyllo pastry) of quinoa, chick peas and roasted vegetables served with a red onion marmalade and reduced balsamic vinegar; it is available by pre-order any time. They also have house made sorbets for dessert. (updated 3/29/11)
Birchgrove Baking
Type of Food: Bakery, Coffee Shop
Address: 29 Elm Street, Montpelier
Phone Number: 802-223-0200
Website: http://www.birchgrovebaking.com/
Birchgrove Baking does not always have vegan options available, but can accommodate requests with a day or two of lead time. Pastries tend to be difficult to make without either butter or eggs (either or is very doable both is tough) and they don’t get too many requests for vegan pastries which is why there isn’t necessarily a daily option. They are able to do cakes, vegan chocolate cake with soy ganache being the most popular, but if there are requests for other flavors we do our best to find the recipes to make it happen. Their philosophy is that they will make any natural substitution to make a cake vegan, but they avoid manufactured products whenever possible so things like switching oil for butter or applesauce for certain dairy products are fine, but we don’t use things like margarine or shortening at all (vegan products or not). They also always have a vegetarian sandwich available for lunch that can be made vegan by omitting the cheese; example roasted beet, winter green, and caramelized onion sandwich on white or wheat with Chevre for the non-vegans. Sometimes a non-vegetarian sandwich can be altered to make it vegan as well. They also have delicious coffee and coffee drinks and offer soy milk for all of our coffee drinks. (update 10/16/09)
